STALK-EYED FLY

any member of the insect family Diopsidae (order Diptera), characterized by eyes mounted on long stalks near the antennae. This arrangement, although advantageous to vision, is an aerodynamic handicap. The one species in North America (Sphyracephala brevicornis) is sometimes found on skunk cabbage. The other species are tropical.
