(c. 3100c. 2686 BC), 1st and 2nd dynasties of Egypt, so named by the Egyptian historian Manetho (fl. 300 BC) after This (modern al-Barba), a city near Abydos, where some of its kings were allegedly buried. Menes (c. 31003040 BC), the traditional founder of the dynasty, was thought to have united the country and established Memphis as his capital. A few campaigns were recorded against the Bedouin tribes of the Sinai Peninsula, the Libyans, and the Nubians.
