During the civil wars of the Momoyama period (15681614), refugees (including potters) fleeing from Seto city settled in Toki and Mino cities under the protection of the lords of Toki. Kilns were established there for the production of Oribe ware for use in the tea ceremony. The city is still noted for its production of pottery. Pop. (1990) 64,946.
