born 45 BC, China died Oct. 6, AD 23, China Pinyin Wang Mang, posthumous name, or shih (Wade-Giles romanization) Chia Huang-ti, or She Huang-ti founder of the short-lived Hsin dynasty (AD 9-25). He is known in Chinese history as the "Usurper." Additional reading Homer H. Dubs, The History of the Former Han Dynasty, vol. 3 (1955), sums up the traditional and rather uncritical attitude toward Wang Mang. Hans Bielenstein, "The Restoration of the Han Dynasty," Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, 26:1-209 (1954), is concerned mainly with Wang Mang's fall.
