( Wystan Hugh Auden 1907–73)
an English poet who wrote poems of many different types, often using traditional forms of verse but with modern language. He also wrote the words for operas and a famous publicity film for the Post Office . In the 1930s, when he wrote some of his best poems, he was a leading member of a group of left-wing writers. Many of his most famous poems are in the collection Another Time (1940). In 1946 he became a US citizen and his later poetry became more religious. His work has had a strong influence on later 20th–century poetry.
