an English writer of many plays for the theatre and television, well known for his cleverly written and often disturbing comedies about English middle-class behaviour, including Absurd Person Singular (1973), Absent Friends (1975), A Chorus of Disapproval (1986) and the series of three plays called The Norman Conquests (1974). He usually gives the first performances of his plays in Scarborough , where he is the artistic director of a theatre company. He was made a knight in 1997.
