( Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell 1857–1951)
a British soldier who became famous for defending the South African town of Mafeking in the Boer War . He later left the army to start the Boy Scout organization (now called the Scouts or the Scout Association) in 1908 and, with his sister Agnes, the Girl Guides (now called the Guides or, in the US, the Girl Scouts) in 1910.
