a simple type of bread made of corn/maize ( BrE ), especially in the southern US. Each is baked or fried as a small piece (‘pone’) shaped like a slightly flat lemon. It is sometimes called by other names, including ‘hoe cake’, ‘johnny cake’ and ‘ash cake’.
