DALEY

Meaning of DALEY in English

I . Arthur Daley

a character in the British ITV television series Minder (1979–1994). A Londoner who sells used cars and other goods, he is always interested in making money, not necessarily in an honest way, but is usually unsuccessful. He employs a ‘minder’, Terry, to protect him. His name is often used to refer to someone like this. Some of the expressions Arthur Daley uses have also become part of the language. For example, he sometimes describes a business deal as ‘a nice little earner’, meaning that it will make him a lot of money easily. He also talks about his wife (who is never seen) as ‘’er indoors’:

The law will make things difficult for the Arthur Daleys of this world.

II . Richard J Daley

( Richard Joseph Daley 1902–76)

the mayor of Chicago from 1955 to 1976, well known for his strong methods. In 1968 he ordered the Chicago police to attack a group of demonstrators (= people taking part in a public protest) and this was embarrassing to the Democratic Party which was meeting there to choose a candidate for President. Daley’s son, Richard M Daley (1942– ), was elected mayor of Chicago in 1989.
