a British Labour politician. He was Secretary of State for employment (1974–6), Leader of the House of Commons (1976–9) and leader of the Labour Party from 1980 to 1983, when Labour lost a general election. He is well known for his left-wing views such as his opposition to nuclear weapons, but he is respected by both sides of British politics as a thinker, speaker and writer.
