Meaning of GELDOF in English

(1951– )

an Irish pop singer who was the singer of the punk (1) group the Boomtown Rats in the 1970s. In 1984 he heard about the lack of food in Ethiopia and brought together some of Britain’s most famous pop stars to form a group called Band Aid . Their record, Do They Know It’s Christmas? , raised millions of pounds for Ethiopia. In 1985 even more money was raised when Geldof organized the Live Aid concerts. He was made an honorary knight by the British government in 1986.
