an English actor. He was well known for his fine voice and for the wide range of his acting. He first became famous for his stage performances in Shakespeare plays with Laurence Olivier in the 1930s, playing characters such as Romeo and Hamlet. He was also successful in comedy plays, and appeared in many films. His role in the television version of Brideshead Revisited in the 1980s made him popular with a wider audience. He is considered one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. He was made a knight in 1953.
