a US composer. He is well known for developing a ‘minimal’ style of music based on repeated rhythms with slight changes of pattern. His best-known work is the opera Einstein on the Beach (1976), the first of a trilogy that also includes Akhnaten and Satygraha . He wrote the music for the films The Hours (2002) and The Fog of War (2003). He has been a Buddhist since 1972.
