a Northern Irish poet who lives in Dublin, Ireland. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1995. His work shows his concern both for the traditions of Irish culture and for the Troubles in Northern Ireland. His collections of poetry include North (1975), Field Work (1979), The Haw Lantern (1987), and Seeing Things (1991). He has won the Whitbread prize The Spirit Level (1996) and for his translation of Beowulf (1999). In 1989 he became Professor of Poetry at Oxford University .
