(1942– )
a British politician who was leader of the Labour Party and leader of the Opposition from 1983 to 1992. During this period he led the party away from extreme left-wing views and introduced more moderate policies. After he lost the general election to John Major in 1992, he was then replaced as leader by John Smith . He was a European Commissioner from 1995 to 2004. His wife Glenys Kinnock (1944– ) has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1995, representing South Wales. She has written several books on world politics and development.
