an English author of novels about spies. His real name is John Cornwell. The character George Smiley appears in many of his books, including The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974). More recent novels include The Tailor of Panama (1996), The Constant Gardener (2001) and Absolute Friends (2003). Many of Le Carré’s books have been made into films or television series.
