LIVINGSTONE

Meaning of LIVINGSTONE in English

I . David Livingstone

(1813–73)

a Scottish explorer and missionary (= person sent to teach the Christian religion). He became famous through his travels in Africa, and was the first European to see the Victoria Falls in 1855. In the late 1860s he was thought to be lost while trying to find the source of the River Nile. The journalist Henry Morton Stanley went to look for him and found him at Ujiji in 1871. Stanley is said to have greeted him with the words ‘Doctor Livingstone, I presume,’ which people find funny because it shows so little emotion or excitement. Livingstone died in Africa but his body was brought back to England and buried in Westminster Abbey .

II . Ken Livingstone

(1945– )

a British Labour politician. He was leader of the Greater London Council (1981–6) and was known (especially in the newspapers) as ‘Red Ken’ because of his left-wing political views. After the Greater London Council was closed down in 1986 he became a Member of Parliament . In 2000 he was not selected as the Labour candidate for Mayor of London but was elected as an independent candidate. In 2004, as the official Labour Party candidate, he was re-elected. He is well known for his unusual hobby of keeping newts (= small animals with long tails that can live in water or on land).
