(1953– )
a British Labour politician. He became a Member of Parliament in 1992, and was the Labour Party’s Director of Campaigns and Communications from 1985 to 1990. He was later made Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1999 but he had to resign from both posts because of political scandals. In 2004 he became Britain’s European Commissioner.
