any of a number of religious plays from the Middle Ages based on stories from the Bible or on the lives of saints. In Britain these were usually performed by guilds (= associations of skilled workers in Britain in the Middle Ages) in the streets of towns. Miracle plays are still performed today in the towns of York , Chester , Coventry and Wakefield in West Yorkshire.
