I . Cardinal Newman
( John Henry Newman 1801–90)
an English priest and poet. When he was the vicar (= priest) of the Anglican University Church in Oxford he shocked many people because his opinions seemed closer to those of the Roman Catholic Church than the Church of England . He became a Roman Catholic in 1845, and a Catholic priest the next year. In 1879 he was made a cardinal (= a senior Roman Catholic priest). His writing had a wide influence on religious thought, and some of his poems are still sung as hymns.
II . Paul Newman
(1925– )
a US actor who has also produced and directed films. He is perhaps best remembered for his part in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). His other films include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), The Hustler (1961), Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Sting (1973), Nobody’s Fool (1994) and The Road to Perdition (2002). He received a special Oscar in 1985 and an Oscar for The Color of Money (1986). Newman is married to the actor Joanne Woodward, with whom he has often appeared in films. He has also been a NASCAR racing driver and he owns a food company called Newman’s Own, whose profits are given to charity.
