(1913– )
a woman who is associated with the start of the civil rights movement in the US. In 1955 she refused to sit in the back of a bus in Montgomery , Alabama , as the local law required her to do as an African American. She was arrested, and Martin Luther King then organized African Americans in a refusal to use the buses. This forced the city to change the law.
