a basic principle in the American Constitution which separates national political power into three ‘branches’ or divisions of government. They are the executive branch under the President , the legislative branch (i.e. Congress ) and the judicial branch (i.e. the Supreme Court ). The arrangement is intended to make sure that no one branch has too much power, and this is achieved by a system of ‘ checks and balances ’.
