I . Alan Shepard

(1923–98)

the first American in space. He made a short sub-orbital flight (= one that does not go completely round the earth in space) in 1961 as part of the Mercury programme. He became the fifth man on the moon when he commanded Apollo 14 in 1971.

II . E H Shepard

( Ernest Howard Shepard 1879–1976)

an English artist, best remembered for his illustrations for Winnie-the-Pooh and other books and poems by A A Milne , and for The Wind in the Willows . He also drew many cartoons (= amusing drawings) for Punch magazine.

III . Sam Shepard

(1943– )

a US actor who also writes and directs plays and films. His play Buried Child (1978) won a Pulitzer Prize , and he wrote such films as Paris, Texas (1984) and Silent Tongue (1994). His films as an actor include The Right Stuff (1983), Crimes of the Heart (1986) and The Pelican Brief (1993).
