I . Clare Short
(1946– )
a British Labour politician. She became a Member of Parliament in 1983 and held several important positions in the Shadow Cabinet before being appointed International Development Secretary in the Labour government of 1997. She is well known for her support for women’s rights and for her opposition to the war in Iraq which caused her to resign from the Cabinet in 2003.
II . Nigel Short
(1965– )
an English chess player. He became a grandmaster (= a chess player of the highest class) at the age of 19. In 1993 he played at the highest level of chess that a British player had ever reached when he lost the final match of the world championship against Garry Kasparov.
