1. ( in World War I ) a line of military defence set up by the Germans in Belgium and France.

2. ( in World War II ) the name given by the Allies to the German line of military defence between France and Germany. A song that was popular with British soldiers at the time began with the line, ‘We’re going to hang out our washing on the Siegfried Line.’
