an English Conservative politician who held several important government posts under Margaret Thatcher . He is known for his right-wing opinions. In the 1980s he was well known for using the phrase ‘on your bike’ to suggest that unemployed people should get on their bicycles and look for work, rather than expecting the state to help them. In the 1990s he used the phrase ‘the cricket test’ to suggest that people in Britain whose families came originally from other countries could not be regarded as British if they still supported the sports teams of their original countries. He was made a life peer in 1992.
