a novel (1857) by the English author Thomas Hughes (1822–96) about a young boy growing up at Rugby School , where Hughes himself was a pupil. A real headmaster of Rugby, Dr Thomas Arnold , appears as a character in the book and has a great influence on Tom, but many of Tom’s experiences are unhappy ones and he is often badly treated by a cruel older boy called Flashman .
