■ verb refrain from insisting on or applying (a right or claim).
Origin
ME (orig. as a legal term relating to removal of the protection of the law): from an Anglo-Norman Fr. var. of OFr. gaiver 'allow to become a waif, abandon'.
Usage
Waive is sometimes confused with wave . Waive means ‘refrain from insisting on or demanding’ ( he ~d all rights to the money ), whereas the much more common word wave means ‘move to and fro’ ( the flag waved in the wind ).
