REALM OF THE DEAD

Meaning of REALM OF THE DEAD in English

[Other] The habitat of the dead which is, in many mythologies, situated either under the earth or else far beyond the known world (for instance, an island somewhere in the ocean). This realm is usually ruled by an underworld god or goddess. The realm of the dead is a dark and horrible place, where the souls of the deceased lead a sad existence. Common too is the notion that the underworld is divided into two parts; one of the just (the Elysian Fields of the Greeks) and one for the sinners (the Egyptian Duat). Sometimes the afterworld is a place of bliss, such as Mag Mell of Celtic mythology. Some of those realms are the Christian hell, the Norse Helheim, the Aztec Mictlan, the Mayan Xibalba, the Greek and Roman Hades.
