(Environmental) A cleanup technique involving the use of an electrical current to treat subsurface hazardous waste. The process, which derived its name from the layered structure of various treatment zones in the soil, grew from a cooperative initiative launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1992 to develop innovative techniques to treat buried hazardous waste in situ, thereby requiring no excavation.
