(1) A shallow place in a body of water. (2) A sandy elevation of the bottom of a body of water, constituting a hazard to navigation. (3) A sandbank or sandbar that makes the water shallow; specifically an elevation which is not rocky and on which there is a depth of water of six fathoms (11 meters or 36 feet) or less. Also referred to as a Sandbank or Sandbar.
