INSTANTANEOUS RATE OF MORTALITY

When fishing and natural mortality act concurrently, the natural logarithm of the survival rate (with sign changed) for deaths due to either natural causes (Instantaneous Rate of Natural Mortality, M) or due to fishing mortality (Instantaneous Rate of Fishing Mortality, F). The Instantaneous Rate of Total Mortality, Z, is the sum of these two rates: Z = F + M.
