An ‧ nan, Ko ‧ fi /ˈænæn, ˈkəʊfi/ BrE AmE

(1938–) the Secretary General of the United Nations from 1997 until 2006. He comes from Ghana, and was formerly responsible for the UN's peacekeeping operations in Bosnia. He is known for his work to stop the spread of AIDS and for trying to find a peaceful solution to the situation in Iraq before the war started. In 2001 he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
