Apprentice, the BrE AmE

a US television programme in which a group of people compete to win the prize of a high-paying job, working for the rich American businessman Donald Trump. The people on the show all stay in one ↑ apartment in New York City and work in teams doing jobs that test their ability to be an ↑ entrepreneur (=someone who starts a new business or arranges business deals in order to make money) . People are judged on how well they do each job. Those who do badly are told to leave until there is a final winner. A British ↑ version of the show was first broadcast in 2005. In the programme the ↑ apprentice s compete for a job in one of the companies owned by Sir Alan Sugar, a rich British businessman. At the end of each programme he points to the loser and says ‘You’re fired!’
