(1947–) a British politician in the Labour Party who became Home Secretary (=the government minister in charge of ↑ domestic matters relating to this country) in 2001. He was the first blind person to be a member of the Cabinet (=the committee containing the prime minister and the most senior ministers of the government) in the UK. In 2004 he ↑ resign ed from his job as Home Secretary after it was reported that he had used his influence to help his lover's ↑ nanny to get a ↑ visa .
