Collins, Mi ‧ chael /ˈmaɪk ə l/ BrE AmE

(1890–1922) an Irish politician and military leader who was involved in the fight to make Ireland independent of the UK. He helped to achieve the agreement that established the southern part of Ireland as an independent state, but he was killed by political opponents who wanted independence for the whole of Ireland.
