(1894–1972) the British king in 1936. He was forced to ↑ abdicate (=give up being king) because he wanted to marry Wallis ↑ Simpson , an American woman who had been married before. This event is known as ‘the ↑ abdication ’. After he abdicated, he was given the title ‘Duke of Windsor’, and he and his wife lived abroad for the rest of their lives.
