If air (at the surface) behind an occluded front is colder than the air it is displacing (often the case in the NE Atlantic/maritime NW Europe), then the front is known as a cold occlusion. The occlusion may be shown on synoptic charts as a linear extension of the cold front. (see also Warm occlusion).
