HIGH-LEVEL SOFTWARE

(n.) Generally, software that is not operationally close to the hardware. Graphical user interfaces, for instance, are high level because they pass through a pipeline that includes the window system software, and they do not "talk" directly to the hardware. By contrast, low-level software does talk directly to the hardware. See also GUI
