Inlet of the Gulf of Mexico , extending 35 mi (56 km) north to the mouth of the Mobile River in southwestern Alabama, U.S. It is 8–18 mi (13–29 km) wide and enters the gulf through a dredged channel between Dauphin Island and Mobile Point.
During the American Civil War it was the scene of the Battle of Mobile Bay .
