BLACK ROCK DESERT

Meaning of BLACK ROCK DESERT in English

arid region of lava beds and alkali flats, composing part of the Basin and Range Province and lying in Humboldt and Pershing counties of northwestern Nevada, U.S. With an area of about 1,000 square miles (2,600 square km), the desert is 70 miles (110 km) long and up to 20 miles wide. Once occupied by ancient Lake Lahontan, it serves as the sink of the Quinn River and, at times, is largely covered with water only a few inches deep. After evaporation, the desert is left with a cover of hard clay, which is frequently encrusted with snowy-white saline matter. In Pershing county the desert is sometimes called the Granite Creek Desert, and a southwest extension lying north of Pyramid Lake is called the Smoke Creek Desert.
