He entered the Royal Navy in 1872 and rose through the ranks to become commander of the fleet during World War I (191416). He won a crucial victory in the Battle of Jutland (1916), after which he was promoted to first sea lord of the Admiralty (191617) and admiral of the fleet (1919). He served as governor of New Zealand (192024).
