British illustrator and satirical artist.

After attracting attention with his mural decorations, he was invited to contribute drawings to Punch magazine in 1850 and in time became its chief cartoonist. His drawings lent new dignity to the political cartoon. Of his many book illustrations, best known are those for Lewis Carroll 's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872), which are remarkable for their subtlety and cleverness.
