an English artist and cartoonist, best known for his illustrations of Lewis Carroll’s books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass . These still appear in versions of the books produced today and most people identify them closely with the original stories. Tenniel was also for many years a political cartoonist for the magazine Punch . He was made a knight in 1893.
