(July 16, 1212) Major battle of the Christian reconquest of Spain.
It occurred during a Christian Crusade against the Muslim Almohad dynasty . Led by King Alfonso VIII, the combined armies of León, Castile, Aragon, Navarra, and Portugal found a secret route through a mountain pass in Andalusia (southern Spain) and surprised and defeated the Almohads at a site about 40 mi (65 km) north of Jaén.
