born Aug. 27, 1884, Port Ryerse, Ont., Can. died July 15, 1961, Calgary, Alta. in full John Edward Brownlee Canadian politician and premier (192534) of the province of Alberta. Brownlee was admitted to the bar in 1912 and made king's counsel in 1921. After working as general counsel to the United Grain Growers and the United Farmers Party in Alberta, he was appointed the province's attorney general (1921) and shortly thereafter was elected to the legislature in a by-election. He remained in his cabinet post until 1924, then succeeded to the office of premier of Alberta in 1925. During his administration he acquired provincial control of Alberta's resources and sold the local railways to the federal systems. He resigned from office in 1934 and returned to practicing law; he became president and general manager of United Grain Growers, Ltd.
