Middle Indo-Aryan literary language, a Prakrit dialect heavily infiltrated with Sanskrit, in which the texts of the northern Buddhist scriptures were written. It was developed before the Christian era; its Sanskrit influence originated in the Mahayana Buddhists' use of Sanskrit in their writings.
