(species Rana temporaria), largely terrestrial frog (family Ranidae), native to Great Britain, Europe, and Asia. It is known in continental Europe as either grass frog or brown frog. The common frog is smooth-skinned and about 7.5 to 8 cm (3 to 3.15 inches) long. Colour and markings vary from gray to greenish, brown, yellowish, or red with few to many spots of reddish brown or black. The common frog frequents damp, shaded areas. It is often used as a laboratory animal and is eaten in some countries.
