private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Chicago, Ill., U.S. It is affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. The university offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in business, education, music, theatre, and arts and sciences. It also operates a law college. DePaul has five campuses throughout Chicago and its suburbs. Important facilities include the Blackstone Theatre and the International Human Rights Law Institute. Total enrollment exceeds 16,000. DePaul began as St. Vincent College in 1898. The university is one of the ten largest Roman Catholic universities in the world. Composer Alexander Tcherepnin taught music at DePaul.
