city, northwestern suburb of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, U.S., on the Des Plaines River. Originally called Randfor Socrates Rand from Massachusetts, who settled there in 1835it was renamed after the river (French: of the plains) in 1869. In 1925 Des Plaines annexed the village of Riverview. The community was primarily residential until the development in the 1950s of O'Hare International Airport to its south stimulated its industrial growth. The main campus of Oakton Community College was moved to Des Plaines in 1980. Inc. village, 1873; city, 1925. Pop. (1993 est.) 54,427.
